Going door to door, for AT&T?

Posted on Fri, Dec. 28, 2007

Q.On a recent Sunday afternoon, a man claiming to be an AT&T salesman was going door-to-door telling residents that AT&T was introducing lower rates for its customers.

He said he needed to see our last statement to prove we were customers.

He carried what appeared to be an AT&T ID card, but was this man legitimate?

A.AT&T does employ door-to-door sales people, according to spokesman Steven Smith, but none would ask to see a statement.

If that happens, ''feel free to call AT&T to verify that the person is who they say they are,'' Smith said via e-mail. The toll-free number is 888-757-6500

A lot of people got taken in with this deal and found out it was not as represented. What I thought was unusual when I saw the contracts was that there were no amounts specified. People signed contracts without knowing what true amount they would be paying. I'm sure there were a lot of cancellations. However, it took a long time to be able to talk to a customer representative. I'm glad the salesmen never came to my door.
